Hi Lydia, Brian, Caitlin, Amy-Lee and Briana,

Here is this week's assignment. Please take note of the deadlines.

Read Wackenroder's A Wondrous Oriental Tale of a Naked Saint and do the following:

1. Using elements from this tale, explain how it fits into the Fairy Tale/Kunstmärchen genre.

2. Trace the relationship of music and poetic language. Is the power evoked by music also accessible to language or does language merely point out to music and/or what music does.

Deadline for posts: 10.00 a.m. on Wednesday

Deadline for comments on a minimum of two posts: Midnight on Wednesday

Looking forward to your posts!

Ann

  1. Hello!

Pardon me for intruding, but I noticed you mentioning the story 'A Wonderous Tale of a Naked Saint'... and I thought that I would send my greetings as well as tell you how the odd little tale has affected my life.

I read the story around twenty years ago and realized at the time that it was very unique. It pointed not only to other states of being as well as a vivid, strange description of the alchemical transformative power of music.

I never quite forgot the images of the naked saint, the spinning wheel of time, and the magical transformation. I would be reminded of it every once and a while during my travels to Asia, and even repeated a completely bastardized version in some of my travel tall-tales.

To make a silly yet true tale short... I re-discovered the power of the naked saint and the magical music when I started a crazy band not too long ago, and now I am a Naked Saint!... minus the genius, but an extra dose of marginalized weirdness!

It is a strangely powerful story.

Cheers, Tom Sin (of The Naked Saints)
